Hydrochloric Acid

What is Hydrochloric Acid?

Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), also known as muriatic acid, is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride. It is used to process steel, batteries, and more. Because of its highly corrosive properties, choosing a safe storage tank is non-negotiable. You can trust Assmann’s thick-walled polyethylene storage tanks to do the job.

Which storage solution is most effective for Hydrochloric Acid?

Assmann recommends that chemical storage tanks be constructed of Crosslink Polyethylene. When practical, Hydrochloric Acid should not exceed 100°F at delivery or during storage. Tanks should be kept from direct sunlight to avoid excessive heat. When possible, multiple smaller storage tanks should be used in lieu of one large storage tank.

Additionally, our experts recommend installing proper venting, as well as bolted or gasketed manway covers, to account for Hydrochloric Acid fumes.

What is the specific gravity of Hydrochloric Acid?

The specific gravity of HCL is 1.19; However, due to its corrosive nature, a 1.9 Specific gravity tank should be utilized for storage.

Common Industries

Hydrochloric Acid is a primary component of a variety of industries, including those listed below.

Cleaners & Disinfectant

Hydrochloric Acid is a common ingredient in household cleaners. Because of its corrosive properties, it’s often used to clean tough stains.

Food Industries

Hydrochloric Acid is a common chemical in food processing for a variety of food products, such as soft drinks, cookies, crackers, and cereals. The chemical can also be used as an acidifier in sauces, juices, and canned goods to improve flavor and prevent spoilage.

Steel Manufacturing

In manufacturing, Hydrochloric Acid is used to remove impurities from carbon, alloy, and stainless steel. In this process, the materials are prepared for final applications in construction projects, car bodies, and household appliances.

The Assmann Way

The Assmann difference is in the process. Assmann keeps quality first and failure far out of mind.

Uniform Wall Thickness

Uniform wall thickness provides better structural integrity compared to other tanks on the market. Because of its unified durability throughout, Assmann storage solutions are less susceptible to tears and spills, protecting your facility from the corrosive qualities of Hydrochloric Acid.

Air Cooling

Air cooling eliminates a process related stress in rotomolding, where water cooling shocks the plastic and causes an abrupt stop to the curing process. Assmann is the only manufacturer who uses non-shielded molds with low temperature heat and gradual air cooling to ensure reliability that lasts.

Specific Gravity

Using a 1.9 rated tank gives additional wall thickness to help extend the lifespan of the storage tank. Assmann offers 1.9 rated storage tanks in either crosslink or linear polyethylene. For storing Hydrochloric Acid, we recommend crosslink polyethylene.

Venting

Under-venting is one of the most common causes for tank failure. When filling and draining tanks, it’s important to keep the tank from vacuum and pressure exposure. A vent two times the size of your largest inlet is required to avoid pressurization. Sometimes a larger vent is necessary when tanks are pneumatically filled. Assmann offers a variety of venting options in multiple sizes and configurations.

How to Avoid Tank Problems

Storing large quantities of Hydrochloric Acid can cause hazardous vapor buildup. That means it’s imperative for vents or fume scrubbers, which is the EPA-approved method for mitigating HCI fumes. Additionally, our experts recommend bolted or gasketed manway covers, as well as a fume scrubber, to ensure the most effective storage for Hydrochloric Acid.

Storage Considerations

Because of its highly corrosive properties, it’s important to choose a trustworthy storage solution for Hydrochloric Acid. To find the right configuration for your facility, contact our storage experts.
