Sodium Hydroxide

What is Sodium Hydroxide?

Sodium Hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with formula NaOH. It is highly soluble in water and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.

Sodium Hydroxide is used in many industries in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents, and as a drain cleaner. Its primary usage includes pH adjustment to give acetic liquids a neutral pH. When dissolved in water or neutralized with acid it creates substantial heat, which may ignite combustible materials.

What is the safest way to store Sodium Hydroxide?

Assmann recommends Crosslink Polyethylene tanks for storing Sodium Hydroxide.

Since Sodium Hydroxide is often delivered hot, Crosslink Polyethylene should be the material of choice since it has a much higher softening point than conventional polyethylene. Assmann also recommends the use of our Heat Tracing and Insulation packages to keep the chemical above its freezing point. We offer 50°F, 80°F and 100°F heat trace insulation packages. Assmann will manufacture Sodium Hydroxide tanks up to 12,000 gallon capacity.

Common Industries

Sodium Hydroxide is a primary component of a variety of industries, including those listed below.

Textiles

Professionals in textile industries use Sodium Hydroxide to remove dye from fabrics, primarily during the washing process. It’s additionally used as a detergent to remove dirt or stains from fabrics.

Dyes

Sodium Hydroxide is used in dyeing practices in the pre-treatment processes. It helps remove natural impurities from the raw fibers, making them more receptive to dyes and improves the overall quality and appearance of the finished textile product.

Pulp & Paper

Pulp and paper industries use Sodium Hydroxide as a strong chemical base to separate lignin from cellulose fibers.

The Assmann Way

The Assmann difference is in the process. Assmann keeps quality first and failure far out of mind.

Uniform Wall Thickness

Uniform wall thickness provides better structural integrity compared to other tanks on the market. Because of its unified durability throughout, Assmann storage solutions are less susceptible to tears and spills, protecting your facility from the corrosive qualities of Sodium Hydroxide.

Air Cooling

Air cooling eliminates a process related stress in rotomolding, where water cooling shocks the plastic and causes an abrupt stop to the curing process. Assmann is the only manufacturer who uses non-shielded molds with low temperature heat and gradual air cooling to ensure reliability that lasts.

Specific Gravity

Using a 1.9 rated tank gives additional wall thickness to help extend the lifespan of the storage tank. Assmann offers 1.9 rated storage tanks in either crosslink or linear polyethylene.

Venting

Under-venting is one of the most common causes for tank failure. When filling and draining tanks, it’s important to keep the tank from vacuum and pressure exposure. A vent two times the size of your largest inlet is required to avoid pressurization. Sometimes a larger vent is necessary when tanks are pneumatically filled. Assmann offers a variety of venting options in multiple sizes and configurations.

How to Avoid Tank Problems

Sodium Hydroxide has a very high freezing temperature and can begin solidifying around 45° Fahrenheit. If your facility is unable to maintain a temperature above the freezing point, we recommend heat tracing and insulation to ensure proper temperature control.

Material

Sodium Hydroxide is often delivered at high temperatures. To ensure safe delivery and storage, we recommend our Crosslink Polyethylene tanks for storing Sodium Hydroxide.
